New Data & Monthly Data Snapshot on Community Progress

The snapshot provides the latest update on the work to end and prevent chronic and veteran homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. This update reflects the progress on the coordinated, community effort to address both chronic and veteran homelessness. Each month, staff from local non-profits and governmental agencies collaborate to update the chronic homelessness and veteran homelessness by-name lists so that the community has an accurate understanding of who needs housing. This includes ensuring that new individuals are added to the by-name list and that individuals who have been housed are removed from the lists.

The first section provides the number of individuals on the chronic homelessness and veteran homelessness by-name lists who are currently in need of housing. The current update reflects numbers updated through February 28, 2019. There is also a total for the number of individuals who are on both by-name lists because they are both a veteran and chronically homeless. The second section provides a number for how many individuals have been housed. For the chronic homelessness by-name list, this number includes individuals who have been housed since January 2015. For the veteran homelessness by-name list, this number includes individuals who have been housed since July 2018. The third section provides a monthly snapshot of the movement on to and off of the by-name lists. The final section describes the permanent housing destinations of individuals who have found permanent housing by chronic homelessness and veteran homelessness.

This snapshot provides an important first step to integrate the data shared on chronic and veteran homelessness in the community. As part of our work to connect data to all stakeholders in the community, we are also collaborating with partners to expand the snapshot. This includes regular reporting on Coordinated Entry and other data to provide a comprehensive picture of progress on the work to end and prevent homelessness. The new, expanded snapshot will be housed on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing & Homelessness Dashboard for easy access.

The by-name lists provide our community with accurate data on who needs housing in the community. Analyzing the number of people who are added to the by-name list each month can help us understand the current need so that we can better target interventions upstream that might reduce the inflow of people. Looking at the number of people and the reasons that they leave the by-name list helps us evaluate the impact of our available resources. By looking at inflow and outflow together, we can see if we are making progress and if not, how many and which additional resources might be needed. And, because we have a list of each person – by name – we are reminded that the numbers we report to the community are made up of individuals with stories that matter.
